Some people may experience allergic contact dermatitis from the chemicals used in acrylic nails. The ingredient that makes acrylics harden, called acrylate, can sometimes cause dryness, cracking, itching, or redness around your nails. And interestingly, because the skin on your eyelids is so thin, you might notice reactions there first.

2. 𝐖𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐍𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐬

The application and removal process can leave your nails thin and brittle. Filing the top of your nail to attach the acrylics and soaking in acetone to remove them can cause significant damage. Your nails may feel weak for a while and take several months to grow back healthy.

3. 𝐍𝐚𝐢𝐥 𝐒𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧

Since acrylics are strong and rigid, they don’t move with your natural nails. Everyday activities like typing or cooking can put stress on the bond between your nail and the acrylic, sometimes causing your nail to separate from the nail bed (known as onycholysis). While this is usually not painful, it can increase the risk of infection.

Lifting or separation of the acrylic nail can trap moisture underneath, creating a space where bacteria or fungi can grow. Infections can make the area appear discolored or crumbly, and they may become sore or inflamed.
